Silicon Carbide, also known as carborundum, is an extremely rare mineral that occurs in Moissanite. Owing to the rarity of this mineral, it is often synthetic. Second to diamonds in hardness Silicon Carbide is used widely as an abrasive, and more recently as a semi-conductor and diamond stimulant of gem quality. In its natural form, Silicon Carbide is a charcoal-grey colour.
These specimens are bonded with an iridescent colouring.
